Wedding Cake Inspiration

Everyone looks forward to seeing the wedding cake at a reception. It is sort of the crowning glory of the party, somewhat like the bridal gown is to the ceremony. Where can a bride get ideas for her cake? These are some great ideas on where to get the inspiration for your wedding cake.

Plan a wedding cake decorating scheme which ties in with your wedding colors. Let’s say that you have chosen a palette of brown and baby blue for everything from the bridesmaid jewelry and dresses to the tablecloths at the reception. A cake in the same color family will be a lovely complement to your design plan. Geometric motifs are an outstanding choice for this color pairing, as are abstract designs. Whatever hues you have chosen to decorate your reception, plan to pull them into the wedding cake.

It is really pretty to recreate bits of the bridal gown in the wedding cake design. Wedding cakes which replicate the lace from the bridal gown are among the most exquisite. Or you could have the baker replicate the bows from your wedding dress, the drape of your skirt, or another special detail, like a colored sash. The jewelry for the wedding is often a fantastic place to get ideas. If crystal bridesmaid jewelry and bridal jewelry will be a feature on your big day, ask the baker to top your cake with a custom crystal cake topper. Cakes can also be dusted with a shimmery powder that mimics the luster of pearls, if pearl jewelry is more your style. Fabulous!

Take a look at the style of your wedding stationery for a fantastic source of style ideas for your cake. If your invitations featured a custom monogram or a special motif, it would be marvelous to have that design used on the wedding cake. A lot of times the general style of the wedding stationery will translate beautifully to cake decorations. Maybe your invitations are in pretty colors like navy and plum – that can be the color palette for your confection. Or maybe you had a retro letterpress style invitation; a letterpress inspired pattern would look beautiful wrapped around the tiers of the cake.

Naturally, your wedding theme is an excellent source of inspiration for your wedding cake. For a tropical wedding, a cake with sugar plumeria blossoms would be incredible. Or have a lush cascade of sugar flowers tumbling down the side of the tiers in honor of a garden wedding. If it is a goth reception, design a red and black cake. A vintage style wedding could be complemented by a confection designed in the popular style of your favorite era. Remember to consider your wedding theme as a source of inspiration for your dessert.

There are countless additional sources of inspiration. You could reproduce the same cake that your parents had at their wedding, base a design on your honeymoon destination, or simply choose a cake that is decorated with your favorite seasonal flowers. Designing your wedding cake should be one of the most enjoyable parts of planning your reception.
